Hamish
and Rachel Gledhill were winners of the Loving Cup for the first couple overall
at the RS 400 Nationals at Pwhelli
SC. Their 10th place also meant that
Rachel won the Ice Bucket for the first lady – presumably for her helm to fill
with a bottle of champagne.
The 4-day event over August Bank Holiday started badly. Hamish’s avowed intention to be tucked up in bed with a cup of cocoa by 9 0’clock on the Friday night went off course at a pre-championship “get together”. This meant the duo had to unravel the mysteries of gate starts, battle against a fleet of sixty RS 400’s, and a sharp chop in a viciously gusty wind, with a hung over helmsman. Ben Ainslie would not have been impressed.
A couple of 28th places and a broken spreader barrel completed Black Saturday. On Sunday things perked up. Racing was cancelled as a gale went through, giving Hamish the opportunity to replace the broken part with the aid of half the RS fleet, and a long walk on Abersoch beach cured the hangover.
With the wind lighter, albeit extremely shifty over the next two days (they were on the water over 7 hours while the race officer set courses on the Monday), Hamish and Rachel started to motor through the fleet with a score line of 4, 6, 14, 8, and 5. This was the 5th best performance over the two days and lifted them to their final place of 10th overall.
