October the 18th/19th saw the annual Laser 2000, 4000, 5000 and Vago Asymmetric Regatta at Rutland Water.

Over 70 boats arrived with a weekend forecast of cool temperatures with wind speeds topping 25 knots and we weren't disappointed as the fleet headed out on Saturday lunchtime.

As the only person sailing single handed I quickly realised after 2 capsizes before reaching the race area that discression was the better part of valor when it came to use of the kite. This policy proved a good choice during day 1 since I was the only leading Vago that stayed upright on the course. A consistant and moderated performance left me in 4th place behind the heavier crewed double handed boats.

Day 2 dawned with light winds but a forecast of 30 knots which it was well on the way to reaching by the start of race 1. Chaos ensued and bearing away through the turtled hulls at the windward mark became an important part of the racing as even the Laser 2000 fleet fell foul of the conditions! I held my nerve and had a close battle to grab 4th position. A long delay between the end of race 1 and the start of race 2 along with the ever worsening conditions took it's toll and many boats headed for shelter, me included. The remaining boats battled on and the rescue teams were kept busy with a couple of boom and mast breakages amongst the continuing capsizes.

4th place overall assured a mention for WRSC and some glassware for me plus a day or two of aching muscles.
